What is PIPA?

The processing of personal data in South Korea is governed by the Personal Information Protection Act, better known as the "PIPA"
Act. It provides safeguards, principles, rights and individual
obligations, similar to those established with the European GDPR. It was the revision of PIPA that tipped the Commission's choice because it strengthened the investigative and enforcement powers of the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC).

PIPA is one of the strictest data protection regulations in the world and is completed by sectoral legislation on computer and communication networks (the law IT Network Act) and on the use of credit information (the Use and Protection of Credit Information Act).
