What is POPIA?
The Parliament of the Republic of South Africa passed the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) in November 2013. The goal is to promote the protection of personal information handled and stored by public and private organizations, as well as to introduce conditions to implement minimum requirements for the processing of personal information. It is also meant to provide for the publication of codes of conduct, guarantee the rights of individuals when it comes to unsolicited electronic communications and automated decision-making, and finally regulate the circulation of personal information beyond the borders of the Republic.
