What is PIPEDA and CPPA?
The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) is Canada's federal privacy law for private sector companies. This law establishes basic rules on how organizations must handle personal information in the course of commercial activity. PIPEDA applies to the collection, use or disclosure of personal information when dealing with commercial activities. Personal Information is defined as any factual or subjective information, recorded or not, about an identifiable individual.
10 principles represent the foundation of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. These principles are accountability, identification of purposes, consent, limiting collection, limiting use, disclosure, and retention, accuracy, safeguards, openness, individual access, and challenging compliance. An updated version, the Consumer Privacy Protection Act (CPPA) has been proposed. The goal is to modernize regulations around commercial activities of Canadian private sector organizations and implement powerful protection over the personal information of Canadian citizens.
